Holland America Line Receives Environmental Award from Port of Seattle

For the sixth year in a row, the Port of Seattle recognizedย Holland America Line’s environment efforts by presenting the cruise line theirย Green Gateway Award. The Port of Seattle also presented the Seattle-based cruise line its Technology Innovator award.
The Green Gateway Awards are presented each year to cruise and commercial shipping lines that call at the Port of Seattle and whose environmental efforts are deemed worthy of recognition.
“Holland America Line’s commitment to the environment is something we’re very proud of, and to be recognized for the sixth year by the Port of Seattle with a Green Gateway Award is a testament to our dedication and focus,” said Orlando Ashford, Holland America Line’s president. “We are continuously seeking more ways to be an environmental steward and responsibly sail the world’s oceans. We are honored to earn these accolades in our hometown.”
Theย Technology Innovator award was given to Holland America for itsย continuedย reductions in fuel use and resultant greenhouse gases. Holland America has alsoย installed IPCO Power Fuel Treatment systems that are designed to enhance combustion, lower emissions, improve fuel economy, extend engine overhaul intervals and lower overall operating costs.
Holland America Line previously received the Green Gateway Award for its use of shore power, comprehensive practices to reduce emissions and an ongoingย commitment to protect the environment.
Since the 1970s, Holland America Line ships have cruisedย from the Port of Seattle. Holland America Line began using Seattle as a home port for Alaska cruises in May 2002. This year’s Alaska cruise season sees three HAL ships based in Seattleย doing 50 Alaska cruises from May through September.
Holland America Line is heavily invested in technology to reduce engine emissions while a ship is in port. Six of the 15 Holland America Line ships, theย Amsterdam,ย Veendam,ย Noordam, Zuiderdam, Oosterdam and Westerdam, use shore power when docked at theย ports of Seattle, San Diego, Halifax and Vancouver.
