Royal Caribbean is expanding its Icon Class lineup with a new ship designed squarely for families. Hero of the Seas is scheduled to debut in August 2027 offering Caribbean cruises from Miami. This new shi, builds on Royal Caribbean’s earlier Icon ships, but with even more options for multigenerational travel.
From expanded pool areas and new water slides to immersive dining and larger family accommodations, this ship will make you feel like it’s a floating resort, theme park, and beach vacation all in one.
Bookings are expected to open soon, with early access for loyalty members before general availability.
A Ship Built Around Eight Neighborhoods
Like the other Icon Class ships, Hero of the Seas will be organized into eight distinct neighborhoods. Each area has its own personality, from lively pool decks to quieter green spaces.
The open-air Central Park returns, filled with thousands of real plants and lined with restaurants and small cafés. The Royal Promenade will once again serve as the social hub, with ocean views, shops, and entertainment throughout the day and evening.
And yes, the Pearl, that dramatic kinetic sculpture that quickly became a signature feature on Icon ships, will be back as well.
I’ve sailed on dozens of Royal Caribbean cruises, and you can get a sense of their style – what it’s like across the fleet – from my Radiance of the Seas review. However, be warned! It’s a very sharp contrast to Hero of the Seas!
More Pools, More Places to Relax
Water is a major focus on this ship, and there will be no shortage of places to cool off.
Guests will find nine pools spread throughout the ship. There are areas designed for families, quieter adults-only spaces, and a few lively spots with music and activity.
One of the new additions is Coconut Cove, a Caribbean-inspired pool area. With in-water loungers, it also has easy access to The Lime and Coconut bar. Located near Central Park, so there’s a bit of greenery mixed in with the poolside setting.
For adults, The Hideaway expands with two pools, including what is expected to be the largest swim-up bar at sea. There will also be an in-water DJ area.

Families traveling with younger children will notice updates to Splashaway Bay, the onboard waterpark designed for kids, along with more room at the Swim & Tonic pool area.
New Slides, Surfing and Active Fun
For travelers who like a little activity mixed into their cruise, Hero of the Seas adds a few new options.
Category 6, the onboard waterpark, will introduce two new family raft slides. One of them is designed as a funnel-style slide, which should be a first at sea. The mat-racing slides will also return with some new variations.
Other familiar Royal Caribbean favorites will still be part of the experience. The FlowRider surf simulator, the Crown’s Edge skywalk and zip line combination, and the rock-climbing wall will all be available.
There are also sports courts for pickleball, basketball, and soccer, along with a mini-golf course for something a little more relaxed.
Hero of the Seas to Have 28 Dining Options
Dining continues to be a major part of the Icon Class experience, and Hero of the Seas will offer 28 places to eat.

A new and interesting addition is the Orleans Parish Supper Club. It blends a multi-course meal with live jazz and dishes inspired by Cajun and Creole cooking. It is designed to feel more like an evening out than just dinner.
Another concept, Royal Railway – Hero Station, is meant to be an immersive dining experience that combines storytelling, visuals, and food. Guests will “travel” to different destinations while dining, using a mix of technology and live elements.
Families will also find something new in the Surfside neighborhood, where hands-on cooking classes will be offered. These range from simple, fun recipes for children to more detailed classes for adults.
The AquaDome Market will return with new food stalls, along with quick options like crêpes and fresh juices.
And for those who prefer the familiar, there will still be plenty of recognizable favorites, including:
- Izumi for sushi
- Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar
- Chops Grille for steak
- Hooked Seafood
- Casual spots like Basecamp, El Loco Fresh, and Sorrento’s
Family-Friendly Accommodations, Including a Three-Story Suite
Accommodations on Hero of the Seas are clearly designed with families in mind.

The most talked-about option is the Ultimate Family Treehouse, a three-level suite with its own rooftop terrace, whirlpool, and separate areas for kids and teens. It is more like a private vacation space within the ship than a traditional cabin.
There is also the Ultimate Family Townhouse, which spans multiple levels and provides direct access to the Surfside family area.
Other options include Surfside Family Suites and Family Infinite Ocean View Balconies. There are the traditional suites like Royal Loft Suites and Icon Loft Suites for those looking for additional space and views.
Entertainment Across the Ship
Entertainment will be spread throughout the ship, from large production shows to smaller live music venues.
The Royal Theater will host new stage productions, while the AquaTheater returns for outdoor performances. Absolute Zero, the onboard ice arena, will once again feature skating shows.
There will also be live music in multiple venues during the day and evening, from morning through late night.
Caribbean Itineraries from Miami
Hero of the Seas will sail 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami.
Every sailing will include a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas, Royal Caribbean’s private island.
Western Caribbean itineraries will visit:
- Roatan, Honduras
- Cozumel, Mexico
- Costa Maya, Mexico
I’ve visited all of these ports including what to do in Cozumel on a cruise day and my day exploring Costa Maya. Both ports are easy to explore at your own pace.
Eastern Caribbean itineraries will include:
- Philipsburg, St. Maarten
- Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas
For Eastern Caribbean, how to spend a day in St. Maarten and exploring St. Thomas are two of my favorite Eastern Caribbean days ashore.
What This Ship Means for Family Cruising
With Hero of the Seas, Royal Caribbean continues to move toward a cruise experience that feels less like a traditional ship and more like a destination on its own.
For families traveling together, including multi-generational, larger accommodations, varied dining, and activities for everyone makes this style of ship appealing.
Retaining quieter spaces and adults-only areas suggests that it is still possible to find a slower pace onboard. Sometimes you just need a break in the action.
